He was ordained in the United Presbyterian Church, USA, in 1961, and served as Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Hamburg, New Jersey, till 1963. From 1963 to 1973 he taught at the Department of Religion, Macalester College. During this time he earned his D. theol. in New Testament at the University of Basel, Switzerland, where he studied with [[Oscar Cullmann]] and [[Karl Barth]]. He published a number of books, among them No Stone on Another, Studies in the Significance of the Fall of Jerusalem in the Synoptic Gospels and Paul and the Torah, as well as many articles and papers.
