''' John Colet ''' (1467-1519) was a British scholar and Renaissance Humanist. His lectures at Oxford on the Letter of Paul broke with the exegetical methods of medieval scholasticism and inaugurated a new approach to Scripture, expounding the text in terms of its plain meaning as seen in its historical context. When [[Desiderius Erasmus]] came to Oxford in 1498, he was profoundly influenced by Colet's teaching and methods
of biblical interpretation.
