Yohanan ben Zakkai was, according to Rabbinic tradition, a sage living at the time of the Jewish War.
Overview
According to Rabbinic tradition, Yochanan ben Zakkai was a disciple of Hillel and one of the leaders of the Pharisees before the Jewish War. When Jerusalem was besieged by the Romans, he escaped hidden in a coffin, predicted the throne to Vespasian, and obtained in exchange the possibility to found an academy at Jamnia. There the foundations of Rabbinic Judaism were laid off in the years following the destruction of the Temple.
