Overview
Xerses I is well known from Greek history for his attempts at conquering the Greek mainland. Xerses won at Thermopylae and conquered Athens, but was forced to withdraw after the defeat of the Persian fleet at Salamis.
Xerses I and the Jews
As King of Persia, Xerses I ruled over Judea. He has been often identified with the literary character of Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther. What happened in Judah during the reign of Xerses I, however, remains obscure. The small region of Judah and the Jews as a minority in the Persian empire do not seem to have attracted any special attention from the king.
