William Muir

William Muir (1819-1905) was a Scottish scholar of Islam. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, studied at Kilmarnock Academy, at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, and at Haileybury College. From 1837 to 1876, worked in the British colonial administration in India. Back to Great Britain served as member of the Council of India in London. In 1884 was elected president of the Royal Asiatic Society, and In 1885 principal of Edinburgh University, until his retirement in 1903. Died in Edinburgh, Scotland.
