The Tomb of Matthew
Legend says that the relics of Saint Matthew were for many years in the city of Naddaver in Ethiopia, where he suffered his martyrdom, but were transferred to Salerno on May 6, 954, where they remained concealed in a cave, for protection, for over a hundred years, until they were "rediscovered" in 1081 and buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Salerno [Italy].
The Tomb of Matthew is still today preserved in the crypt of the Cathedral. Every year, on September 21, a reliquary containing the arm of Matthew is carried in procession on the streets of the town.
