According to Christian traditions, the Holy Prison is the place where Jesus was held prisoner before his crucifixion.
Overview
There are four competing locations in Jerusalem as the Prison of Christ, namely:
- Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem [Israel] -- In the north-east side of the complex there is the Prison of Christ, alleged by the Franciscans to be where Jesus was held.
- Monastery of the Praetorium, Jerusalem [Israel] -- The Greek Orthodox Church maintains that here, near the first station on the Via Dolorosa, was the real place where Jesus was held.
- Monastery of the Flagellation, Jerusalem [Israel] -- The Armenians regard a recess in this building, near the second station on the Via Dolorosa, as the Prison of Christ.
- St. Peter in Gallicantu, Jerusalem [Israel] -- A cistern among the ruins near the Church is also alleged to have been the Prison of Christ.
