Paul P. Levertoff (1878-1954), scholar & translator

Paul Phillip Levertoff (1878-1954) was a Russian-British scholar of Jewish descent. Born in Belarus in a Jewish Hassidic family, received a traditional Jewish education. In 1895, while studying at Königsberg, converted to Christianity and became deeply involved in the Christian mission to the Jews. Professor of Hebrew and Rabbinics at the Institutum Judaicum Delitzschianum (IJD) in Leipzig [Germany], 1912-1918. Then moved to England, where he resumed his missionary work and his dream of establishing a Hebrew Christian Church. Published works on Christianity (Jesus, Paul, Augustine) in Hebrew, and translated Jewish works (notably, the Zohar) in English.
