The Man with an Unclean Spirit / Exorcism at the Synagogue in Capernaum is one of the Miracles of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Mark (1:21-28), and the Gospel of Luke (4:31-37).

Overview

As the Messiah Son of Man Jesus has the authority over the evil spirits.

In the Jewish apocalyptic tradition, the evil spirits are the children of the fallen angels (Titans) and the women. The Giants died with the Flood but their spirits are still around causing any kind of evil and disease. They still obey the orders of their fathers (the falle angels, or Titans) who are now imprisoned in Hell.

The evil spirits will be destroy by the Son of Man with the Last Judgment, but in his first coming Jesus has not come to destroy them. Jesus has come as the forgiver, and has authority to free humans from their power.

The Man with an Unclean Spirit, in ancient sources

Gospel of Mark

...-> Temptation of Jesus -> Beginning of Galilean Ministry -> Call of the First Disciples -> Man with an Unclean Spirit -> Peter's Mother-in-Law -> Preaching Tour -> Cleansing a Leper ->...

Mark 1:21-28 (NRSV) -- 21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, 24 and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching--with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Gospel of Luke

Luke 4:31-37 (NRSV) -- 31 He went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbath. 32 They were astounded at his teaching, because he spoke with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 "Let us alone! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" When the demon had thrown him down before them, he came out of him without having done him any harm. 36 They were all amazed and kept saying to one another, "What kind of utterance is this? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and out they come!" 37 And a report about him began to reach every place in the region.
