Lydia

Lydia of Thyatira was a leader of the early Church.

Overview

Lydia is a woman and a God-fearer who is regarded as the first documented convert to the early Christian movement in Europe. According to the Acts of Apostles, she "was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth" and gave hospitality to Paul and his companions in her house in Philippi during Paul's Second Missionary Journey; see Paul in Philippi.

Reception History

Lydia is a quite neglected character in the New Testament. Only from the mid-19th cent. she is discovered by novelists and playwrights.

Lydia (sources)

Acts 16:14-15 (NRSV)-- 14 A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. 15 When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she prevailed upon us.

Lydia (cinema)

In the movies, Lydia is present only in a few major productions on the Life of Paul of Tarsus or the Acts of the Apostles.
