Leon Modena (1571-1648) was an Italian Jewish scholar, rabbi, writer. His sermons in Venice attracted large crowds. Had extensive knowledge of Talmudic literature, Italian, and Latin. Directed theater and music academy in Venice ghetto. His work, which enjoyed large popularity also among non-Jews, offered first survey of customs of post-biblical Jews in Italian language and throughout Europe, thanks to numerous translations.
