James Hardy Ropes (1866-1933) was an American scholar.
Biography
James Hardy Ropes was born September 3, 1866 in Salem, MA.
He graduated from Harvard College (1889) and Andover Theological Seminary (1893). After studyng in Germany for two years, he joined the Faculty of Harvard Divinity School as Instructor and Assistant Professor (1895-1903).
In 1901 he was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church.
In 1903 he received the Bussey Chair of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation, and in 1910 the Hollis Professorship of Divinity, that he kept until his death in 1933. From 1921 he served as editor of the Harvard Theological Review.
Ropes died in 1933.
