Howard Melvin Fast (1914-2003) was an American Jewish novelist. Born in New York, NY on 11 November 1911, from a family of Jewish immigrants from Great Britain and Ukraine. A writer and journalist, Fast was blacklisted for his membership in the American Communist party. In the 1950s he broke with the Party, denouncing the lack of freedom in Communist countries in Eastern Europe. His novels, such as Spartacus (1951) and April Morning (1961), celebrate the struggle of humankind for freedom, justice and equality. Died in Greenwich, CT on 12 March 2003.
