He That Cometh: The Messiah Concept in the Old Testament and Later Judaism (1954) is a book by Sigmund Mowinckel and the English edition of Han som kommer (1951 Mowinckel), book. Translated from the Norwegian by G.W. Anderson.

Abstract

In this groundbreaking work, Mowinckel critically examines the Jewish Messianic ideal. First, Mowinckel establishes how, contrary to the New Testament’s portray, in the OT and later Judaism a Messianic figure was not always connected with Israel’s future hope or eschatology. He then traces the development of two divergent Messianic expectations within Israel: 1) a national, political, and this worldly Messiah, and 2) an eschatological, universalistic, and ‘other-worldly’ Messiah. Next, he describes the origins of the ‘Son of Man’ concept, and how some Jews assimilated and connected this conception to their thoughts on the Messiah. He concludes by showing how Jesus did not simply adopt the Jewish Messianic Ideal as it was, but drew from other biblical and late Jewish ideas, such as the ‘Son of Man’ and the suffering and atoning ‘Servant of the Lord’ from Deutero-Isaiah, to express his personal understandings of his person and his vocation. – Deborah Forger - University of Michigan.
