Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Greece

Jews settled in Greece in Hellenistic times and ever since have been a constant presence in Greek society for more than 2000 years. The Greek Jewish community suffered terrible losses during the Holocaust.

Christianity is attested in Greece since the very first decades after the death of Jesus, thanks to the preaching of Paul and John. Christianity soon grew to become the predominant religion and such remained even when Greece was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, from the mid-15th century to the early 19th century.

Contemporary times

Today, the overwhelming majority of Greeks are Orthodox Christians. The Greek Orthodox Church is recognized by the constitution as the prevailing religion. There are only small groups of Catholics and Protestants.

More significant is the presence of Jews (although the Jewish population has dramatically decreased with the Holocaust) and Muslims (whose numbers have grown as the result of immigration).
