David Noel Freedman (1922-2008), scholar
David Noel Freedman (1922-2008) was an American scholar. After earning his PhD in Semitic Languages and Literature at the Johns Hopkins University in 1948, Freedman held a series of professorial and administrative positions at various theological institutions and universities, notably, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (1948-64), San Francisco Theological Seminary (1964-71), the University of Michigan (1971-92), and the University of California San Diego (1986-2008). A prolific author, he is best known as the general editor of the Anchor Bible Project (New York: Doubleday; now with Yale University Press), which consists of the Anchor Bible Critical Commentaries, the six-volume Anchor Bible Dictionary (1992), and the Anchor Bible Reference Library.
