Bible Translations into Lithuanian
Overview
The 16th Century
In 1547 the first printed Lithuanian book, the Catechism by Protestant Reformer Martynas Mažvydas, included the Decalogue, two Psalms of David, and extracts from the Gospels and the Letters; see Catechismusa prasty szadei (1547 Mažvydas), book.
In 1579 a large selection of NT texts, including the Gospels and the Epistles, was published in Lithuanian translation by Baltramiejus Vilentas; Euangelias bei Epistolas (1579 Vilentas), book.
Between 1579 and 1590, Jonas Bretkūnas completed the first translation of the whole Bible in Lithuanian. The work however was not published.
The 17th Century
In 1659 Samuel Bogusław Chyliński published large portions of the Old and New Testaments in Lithuanian translation in London, England.
The 18th Century
The so-called Protestant Lithuanian Bible was published in 1735 by a team of translators under the supervision of Johann Jacob Quandt.
The 19th Century
Only in 1816 a Roman Catholic translation of the New Testament, based on the Vulgata, was published by the Bishop of Vilnius Juozapas Arnulpas Giedraitis; see Naujas Istatimas (1816 Giedraitis), book.
The same year University of Königsberg Professor Liudvikas Rėza published his translation of the whole Bible; see Biblia (1816 Rėza), book
The 20th Century
