Antonio Frova (1914-2007) was an Italian scholar.
Biography
Antonio Frova was born at Verona, Italy on August 21, 1914.
An expert in Roman archaeology, he graduated from the Universita' Cattolica of Milan in 1935, and specialized in History of Art at Padua and at the Scuola Archeologica Italiana in Athens (1938-39). He was Professor at the University of Milan (1969-72), Lecce (1976-77), and then Genoa, and carried on numerous archaeological excavations in Italy, Bulgaria and Israel.
Frova died in Milan on May, 19, 2007.
Works
Between 1959 and 1962, Antonio Frova was the director of the Italian Archaeological Mission at Caesarea Maritima in Israel, where he excavated the Herodian Theater and found the famous Pilate Inscription bearing the name of Pontius Pilate, preafectus of Judea. The inscription, now at the Israel Museum at Jerusalem, is the only epigraphical evidence of the existence of Pontius Pilate.
