Alien Jesus refers to a series of fictional speculations making Jesus an alien (or half-alien), or connecting Jesus with the intervention of aliens.

Overview

The belief that Jesus was an alien (or half-alien) or was chosen (and resurrected) by aliens as their prophet, is held by several UFO religions, notably, the International Raëlian Movement founded in 1974 by Claude Vorilhon.

A series of arch-fi books and novels has ever since popularized the concept. The "alien" narrative was occasionally connected to other fictional narratives. The Talmud Jmmanuel (1978 Meier), arch-fi claimed that the Alien Jesus went to India (see Jesus in India). Genesis of the Grail Kings (1999 Gardner), arch-fi made Jesus part of a race of hybrids which started with Adam and Eve and through Mary Magdalene and the French Connection reaches the present.

On March 26, 1997, the belief in Alien Jesus suddenly came to prominence in the news, when 39 members of the “Heaven’s Gate Group" were found dead at Rancho Santa Fe, California. According to the group, founded in the late 1970s, Jesus was an alien who came to earth on board of a spaceship hiding beyond the comet mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew. When the arrival of the comet Hale-Bopp was announced in 1995 and the comet became visible in the sky in March 1997, the group was convinced that the same spaceship was now carrying back Jesus to renew the earth and gather all the “children of heaven.” An "Away Team” committed suicide with the hope of joining the spaceship and being reunited with their Master in Heaven.
