Adolf Reifenberg (1899-1953) was a German-born Israeli scholar.
Biography
Adolf Reifenberg was born March 8, 1899 in Berlin [Germany]. He graduated in agricultural chemistry from the University of Giessen.
After World War I, he moved to Palestine, where he began working at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as an expert in soil chemistry. In 1947 he was appointed Associate Professor and became Professor in 1952.
Reifenberg was also an archaeologist and numismatist. He built up one of the finest collections of Palestinian and ancient Jewish coins (presented after his death to the State of Israel). In 1950 he founded the Israel Exploration Journal, which he edited until his death, and in 1951 became the first president of the Israel Numismatic Society.
Reifenbeg died August 27, 1953.
